Common Weimaraner Health Concerns
Like other large dog breeds, the Weimaraner is often prone to common health issues like these:
Elbow & Hip Dysplasia: According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), many medium-sized to extra-large dog breeds are susceptible to elbow and hip dysplasia. This issue arises from birth when the bone in a joint is misshapen, causing an awkward fit in your dog’s joints. This defect can often lead to joint pain, osteoarthritis, limping, and trouble standing up.
Digestive Issues: Large to giant breeds commonly have digestive problems, like bloating. These issues can stem from their diet, lifestyle, or genetics.
Allergies: Seasonal allergies can affect this breed, like many other types of dogs. Typically, allergies will present as a skin rash coupled with scratching and itching. A strengthened immune system can help combat these common allergies.
About the Weimaraner Breed
Bred in Germany by 19th-century aristocrats, the Weimaraner was first kept a secret. This dog’s intelligence and hunting prowess were too good to share with the world. The Grand Duke of Weimar bred these dogs from all-smelling Bloodhounds and various German and French hunting dogs, creating a bold, fearless, and intelligent breed. Because of these unique traits, German aristocrats used Weimaraners to flush out wolves, bears, and mountain lions. Their fierce bravery and unwavering drive matched them well against Europe’s top predators.
As predator populations dwindled, the Weimaraner’s secret got out, and the breed found new roles across the pound, in the 1930s United States. Here, Weimaraners found a niche as pointers and retrievers, helping their owners spot and hunt wild birds and game. Today, although Weimaraners are still used as loyal hunting dogs, they’ve also found a more domesticated role in many active families. But that prey drive still remains, even in household Weimaraners. So, squirrels, beware.
Weimaraner Temperament
Weimaraners are deeply affectionate “Velcro dogs.” They love staying near their people, if not completely attached to their hip. Many Weimaraner owners report having to manage their Weimaraner’s separation anxiety. Specific training can help teach a dog self-soothing behaviors, while certain supplements, like our Calming Dog Chews, can help relax your Weimaraner when you leave them home alone.
Weimaraners have a keen intelligence that matures early. This means they can be pretty smart, even as younger pups. So, you might find yourself trying to outsmart a growing gray doggo pretty early in their life (hiding treats in the cupboard is nearly impossible with their length and Bloodhound senses). When Weimaraners socialize early, they can extend their affection to friends, family, and other pets. Young Weimaraners can be a little awkward; they just don’t know how to manage their quickly expanding frame. Early training will help your Weimaraner grow with a little more grace.
The main factor to consider with Weimaraners is their high energy. These dogs love to run, and they love to run fast. So, they do best in active households, typically making great jogging companions. Just watch out; they’ll be able to outrun you pretty soon.
How to Care for These Dogs
Weimaraners are fairly easy dogs to train with minimal grooming maintenance. Here are a few tips to help keep your Gray Ghost happy, healthy, and lively, from their puppy years and well into their golden years.
Puppy Training & Socialization
The Weimaraner is eager to please and vies for an irreplaceable spot by your side. So, they gravitate toward behavior training easily. The trick with Weimaraners is socializing them early. Socialization is when you introduce your puppy to new people and environments, helping them get comfortable with unfamiliarity. This process helps your dog distinguish the difference between friend and foe, get along better with other dogs, and build trust in your relationship with them.
Involved Playtime
Weimaraners are smart, loyal, and high-energy. So, they need a certain pedigree of daily exercise—one that involves your participation. Exercising with your dog builds your bond while tiring your pupper out and sharpening their mind. Involved play can include fetch, tug-of-war, scent games, hide ’n’ seek, and more.
Finding Their “Off” Switch
Weimaraners were bred to be loyal hunting dogs, chasing game from sun up to sunset, and returning home to clock out. So, their energy tank runs deep. But it does run out (trust us). You’ll just need to find creative ways to tire your Weimaraner out, or their leftover energy may spill into undesirable behaviors.
